LES MIS PART 1 SUMMARY

The first book of Les Misérables is mostly about Monseigneur Bienvenu who is known to be the Bishop of Digne. This first book shows so many life-defining moments in Bishop Myriel's time spent with man convinced to death, a man who was a former member of the Convention, and what he's done for his people.

One of the most meaningful moments in the Bishop's job was when he volunteers to spend time with a man convinced to death. No one besides the Bishop volunteered to spend his time with this man who was in his last moments of his life, The Bishop spent his whole day with this man and he even prayed for him and to god. The next day the man was executed and the Bishop of Digne went to contemplate the idea of execution. The second moment that stood out in the book is when the Bishop pays another visit to a man who was dying. This man has not been convicted of anything but to the Bishop and other's this man was bad. Although this does not stop the Bishop from paying a visit. They both had a talk about the French Revolution. After the conversation was over M. Myriel gains respect for the man. This moment strengthened his desire to help the poor.

Throughout this whole book he has also helped in many other occasions such as his community. There was a time when the hospital was overcrowded due to an epidemic that erupted. The Bishop had a palace that was way bigger than the hospital so the Bishop decided to give it to the hospital and took a smaller home. He also visited villages that weren’t visited as much because of the difficulty of reaching them. In addition the Bishop accepted refugees in his home. This first book really defines the Bishops characteristic and was very detailed. They were many difficulties but the Bishop was always there to help like if his readers were there.
