The first book of Les Misérables is mostly about Monseigneur Bienvenu who is known to be the Bishop of Digne. This first book shows so many life-defining moments in Bishop Myriel's time spent with man convinced to death, a man who was a former member of the Convention, and what he's done for his people. One of the most meaningful moments in the Bishop's job was when he volunteers to spend time with a man convinced to death. No one besides the Bishop volunteered to spend his time with this man who was in his last moments of his life, The Bishop spent his whole day with this man and he even prayed for him and to god. The next day the man was executed and the Bishop of Digne went to contemplate the idea of execution.
